Coates 1989 ROCKSTEAD, Domesday Book manor in Rockbourne Seems to be hypothetical Old English 'Hroces ieg'='rook's dry ground in marsh'. This would suit the site of 'Marsh Farm' 1miile to the West, better. Some Tudor spellings suggest that the second element is either 'stede'='stead, place', or 'seath'='pit'. Though only the latter is plausible, the former has won through. |
